Today, Trump’s are and see has elected new leadership. Denver is dealing with an influx of migrants. Liberty University got a historic fine for its response to sexual assault.

Donald Trump has completed his takeover of the Republican National Committee. Members gathered yesterday to elect new leaders. The team includes his daughter-in-law Laura Trump. The outgoing Republican National Chair, Ronna McDaniel, called for party unity. But, the committee did not choose her for the new leadership team.

It does not answer a big question of the new Trump takeover. Will Trump use our money to cover part of his huge legal bills? The committee elected Michael Watley as its national chair. The RNC also declared Trump the presumptive nominee.

Thousands of migrants have been arriving in Denver recently. They are putting a new strain on the city. I spoke with USA Today national correspondent Trevor Hughes. We talked about the people seeking a chance at a better life and possible solutions. Going forward, Trevor, have you been here?

Sir Trevor, let’s start with this: how many migrants have arrived in Denver recently? We’re looking at about forty thousand migrants in the past year. That may not seem like a lot in the context of a city. But, for Denver, that’s a lot. You know, under normal circumstances, Denver has a population of ah

The housed people have a thousand or two thousand. Forty thousand people are arriving in the city. They have no shelter, resources, or work permission. This is a huge change. Trevor, who are these folks? Where are they from and why did they end up in Denver? Many are from Venezuela. They left South America.

Venezuela is a collapsing country. They came 3,000 miles from Venezuela through Panama and Mexico to the Texas border. Most folks I’ve talked to then crossed the border. They surrendered to immigration authorities in Texas.

Often, Texas officials give migrants bus tickets to Denver. What strain does this put on border communities like El Paso? They have managed immigrants for generations. Denver is 600 miles from the border and has this influx of new arrivals.

These people have no connection to the community. It’s not like they have an uncle, friend, or buddy who will hire them. They sense no connection. Often, they don’t know English. This means Denver has spent tens of millions to provide shelter, food, and help.

We’re showing up in t-shirts and flip-flops and we’re talking about Denver in the winter. It’s well below freezing all the time at night at least. What solutions, then, are available Trevor at the local levels? Is this a job for the government or for non-profits or religious organizations to try to solve? What we’ve seen in Denver is a real problem.

The effort is joint. It’s between city governments, nonprofits, churches, and people who want to help. What’s odd about Colorado is that many cities around Denver have refused to help. They have said no. The state has been quiet on this. That has left the Denver mayor looking around. He is saying “Where’s the federal government?”” He’s angry.

Raza has been pushing the Biden administration to free up funding. He also wants them to create a national plan to help these folks. You mentioned the federal government. President Joe Biden touched on immigration in his State of the Union address this week.

How is this issue unfolding on the federal level, Trevor? How big will it be in the election later this year? Immigration has become huge in it.
